GREEN TIP OF THE MONTH

Whether you are traveling, going to a potluck, going on a picnic, or having a barbecue in the back yard, use reusable cups, plates, and cutlery.

Americans throw away an estimated 25 billion Styrofoam cups every year. Once in the landfill, Styrofoam takes 20,000 years to degrade. Styrofoam and other petroleum-based products consume 25 percent of our landfill space. Burning Styrofoam releases over ninety different harmful compounds including dioxin, which raises cancer risk. While it might seem obvious that paper cups are a better alternative, life cycle assessment studies of the two indicate otherwise. After considering the inputs and outputs of materials and energy as well as all of the associated environmental impacts of paper, it is estimated that Styrofoam cups release 35 % fewer toxic chemicals into the environment and require half the energy to produce than paper cups. However, you can burn the Styrofoam cups and it takes up landfill space to throw them away. The cost of biodegradable plastics is affordable and increasingly more available. Yet biodegradable plastic needs to be composted to breakdown. So on your next outing, just take a reusable cup.

2010 Census Seeks Employees!

The Glens Falls office of the US Census is recruiting residents of Clinton, Essex, Fulton, Hamilton, Saratoga, Warren, and Washington counties.  We are looking for people interested in part-time or full-time employment that is temporary.  The hours are flexible.   Field work starts at $13/hour plus 50 cents per mile. Simply call 1-866-861-2010 to schedule an easy half-hour employment exam.  A practice test is available at www.2010censusjobs.gov.

It is important for the accuracy and cost-effectiveness of this operation to hire citizens within their own communities, rather than hiring from outside.
