KEENE GREEN TIP OF THE MONTH

A healthy lawn adds beauty and works as an air conditioner by cooling your property in the summer. Here are some tips for maintaining a healthy lawn without damaging the environment.
* Plant grass seed on existing lawns in spring and fall to out compete weeds.
* Fertilize in early fall with a phosphorous free fertilizer.
* Set your lawn mower to cut the grass when it is 3” high.
* Leave the clippings on the lawn. They will contribute nutrients and help reduce thatch.
* Water early in the morning when there is less than 1”/week of rain.
A healthy lawn can co-exist with quite a few grubs and does not need pesticide treatment.
For questions about maintaining healthy lawns call Cornell Cooperative Extension of Essex County at 962-4810.
